The LEN Trophy matches of Group E in Budapest, Hungary started with a pretty surprising result. Home team "Dominó" Polo SC Budapest, the current leader of the Hungarian league, was stopped by the new Dutch cup winner ZPC "E-on" Het Ravijn. The team from Nijverdal, bronze medallist at the inaugural LEN Trophy competition in 2000, saved a tie in regulation, and in extra-time Het Ravijn's Yasemin Smit scored the only goal. The final score was 8-9 (1-1, 1-1, 3-3, 3-3/0-1, 0-0) in favour of the Dutch, who are coached by the former German women's national coach Marcel ter Bals since the beginning of the new season.

On game day 5 of the EuroLeague Italy's national broadcaster Rai Sat Sport will show the top match between CN "Atlantis" Posillipo (Italy) and Honvéd "Dominó" Budapest (Hungary) live on TV. The rematch of the 2005 final game to be held at Piscina Scandone indoor-pool in Naples, Italy will start next Wednesday (15 February) at 8:30 CET; as usual the coverage can also be received abroad via satellite.
Naples' Piscina Scandone indoor-pool will be the venue for the EuroLeague top match.

Fremantle to clash with top Hungarian club on first night of Tom Hoad Cup |

Australia's reigning champion Fremantle Mariners will play leading Hungarian club BVSC on the opening night of the Tom Hoad Cup international water polo tournament on December 27. It rates as the possible final combination on December 30 and should set a high tone for the four-day event. The South African national team and Chinese provincial side Guangdong will open the tournament at 6.15pm while the Mariners-BVSC match starts at 8pm. The nine-times National League grand finalists Mariners will play South Africa on the Wednesday night and Guangdong on the Thursday leading into Friday's play-offs.

Canada's junior national women's team lost 8-7 in a shoot-out to the ANC Glyfada-Renault club squad from Greece on Saturday to finish in sixth place at the Hungarian International in Dunaújváros. Stephanie Valin of Pointe-Claire, Que., and Katie Monton of Dorval, Que., scored twice in regulation time for Canada with singles to Marie-Chantal Patry-Proulx of Gatineau, Que., Joelle Bekhazi of Pointe-Claire, Que., and Carmen Eggens of Vancouver. The score was tied 7-7 after regulation.

The world's best player will contest next month's Tom Hoad Cup international men's water polo tournament, which will have four continents represented.At the launch at the Bicton Pool here last night, Melville Water Polo Club President David Neesham announced that provincial team Guangdong from China, Hungarian club team BVSC and the South African national team will challenge Fremantle Mariners for the trophy. He also announced that Gergely Kiss, Hungary's dual Olympic champion and voted the best player in the world for 2004, will play for reigning champion Fremantle Mariners.

The International Olympic Committee(IOC) continued its drive to increase the number of women competitors by raising participation in other sports. Women's teams were increased from 10 to 12 in football, hockey and handball, but not in waterpolo. Like in 2004 eight teams will compete for the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. While a bid to introduce women's boxing at the 2008 Beijing Games was rejected by the IOC Executive Board (EB) on Thursday, an open water 10km swimming race for men and women was also added to the Beijing line-up. Furthermore a women's 3,000 metres steeplechase will be added to the athletics programme, increasing the number of Olympic competitions from 301 to 302.

The national cup competition is the season opener in Hungary, and after the quarter-finals only two clubs from the capital Budapest are left in the race for the first title in the country of the Olympic gold medallist. Three days before the first EuroLeague game in Istanbul (Turkey) Szegedi VE "Beton" knocked out Ferencvarosi TC Budapest in two very close games, 6-6 and 7-6. In a duel of two Budapest teams the reigning cup holders of "Teva" Vasas-Plaket knocked Ujpest TE "Dermax" thanks to a 14-10 away victory; the second match ended with a 10-10 tie.
